Tipping involves forming a radius or  chamfering the end of the tube to facilitate the assembly of parts. The announcement involves a 40,000 sq ft expansion to Zeus' Irish facilities, which is expected to take 3 years to complete along with the creation of 75 new manufacturing jobs in Letterkenny. This news is especially welcomed since Ireland is currently facing major budget cuts and high unemployment as ongoing effects of the financial crisis of 2009.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“The decision by Zeus to expand its operation in Letterkenny is testament to the availability of a highly-skilled workforce in the North West region. On behalf of the government, I look forward to providing continued support to Zeus as its Irish operation grows and develops.” Ireland Minister for Education Mary Coughlan TD.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Zeus CEO John Worley, Jr. has added, “Since we opened a facility in Ireland in 2005, we have seen tremendous growth in our European customer base. To some people this is nothing new, but to others this is down right chilly.  &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/Zeus"&gt;Zeus&lt;/a&gt; provides tubing that is no stranger to these cold temperatures. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most plastics at room temperature show their familiar properties of flexibility (a low Young’s modulus) and high resistance to cracking, but when the temperature decreases this can change rapidly and many common plastics become brittle with low failure stresses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Low temperatures can be more harmful to plastics than high temperatures. Catastrophic failures can occur if materials selection does not take account of the low temperature properties of plastics.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Fluoropolymers at Low Temps&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fluoropolymer resins maintain their lubricity, abrasion resistance, and strength at temperatures below freezing. Disaster can strike anywhere at any time which could jeopardize a business’s ability to function normally.  As a supplier to a global market with applications including medical, industrial, aerospace and electronic industries, &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/zeusinc"&gt;Zeus&lt;/a&gt; has many customers depending on us for the supply of high quality polymer components.  &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/zeusinc"&gt;Zeus&lt;/a&gt; has production facilities in the United States including: Raritan, NJ, Orangeburg, SC, Gaston, SC and Aiken, SC and a European facility located in Letterkenny, Ireland.  Each facility has its own tooling shop, extruder equipment, procurement, quality control and distribution.  There is no interdependency among the facilities.  The geographic separation of the facilities ensures that not more than one facility would experience a significant loss caused by the same catastrophic event (tornado, hurricane, wild fire, earthquake, epidemic, act of terrorism, etc.). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Primary and secondary vendors of resins with multiple manufacturing facilities and maintenance of minimum in-house inventories ensures adequate supplies of raw materials to cover vendor lag, demand surges and temporary shortages.  Zeus’s ability to produce product also depends on extruding equipment, special tooling and skilled technicians.  All Zeus facilities use the same extruder types (Melt and Paste).  The Paste Extruders and special tooling are manufactured by Zeus.  Our skilled workforce is also transferable between facilities. Although most orders for a particular customer are produced at designated production site, the use of the same raw materials and raw material suppliers at each site (with few exception) means customers would not need to qualify new materials if a change of manufacturing facility were required. Data is maintained in an ERP system which is backed-up daily to the server and weekly to a secure offsite location. Our Customer Service Representatives and Technical personnel can work remotely to assist in meeting customer needs and requests even during a time of crisis at one of our facilities. Each application requires a unique amount of pressure and Zeus is here to help solve the problem.  Zeus materials have varying properties and the calculation of burst pressure depends several factors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In order to determine the theoretical number you will need: Inner Diameter, Outer Diameter, and Material Tensile Strength.  A list of tensile values is below.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tensile Strength Values:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  * PTFE - 2,500 psi&lt;br /&gt;  * FEP - 3,000 psi&lt;br /&gt;  * PFA - 4,000 psi&lt;br /&gt;  * ETFE - 6,500 psi&lt;br /&gt;  * PEEK - 13,000 psi&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The equation can be found &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/burstpressure"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt; and it does not factor in steam pressure, altitude, etc., and it is calculated at ambient room temperature. This system for data collection and management of nonconformances, customer complaints, and CAPA is fully integrated with our Oracle ERP system which has been in use since 2005.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On October 4, 2010 Zeus implemented the first phase of this project, receiving inspection at the Orangeburg facility.  In this new process, the receiving inspector enters data from supplier certifications and from Zeus inspections into Oracle Quality.  The system automatically compares these results to the material specifications maintained within Oracle.  When all results are within spec, the material is released to the appropriate inventory for use.  Out-of-spec material is assigned to MRB so that it cannot be issued to jobs within the system.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If material is rejected, a &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Nonconformance&lt;/span&gt; is issued within the system.  For purchased materials, this results in a lower quality rating for the supplier.  Reports of supplier quality and delivery are available through the system, allowing easy monitoring of supplier performance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Depending upon the seriousness of a nonconformance, we may also require the supplier to formally explain what caused the error and how they have fixed the source of the problem. This Corrective Action Report, or &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;CAR&lt;/span&gt;, documents the problem, its root cause, and actions taken to assure that it will not happen again.  This information is recorded in Oracle Quality and reported on an Oracle Report.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oracle Quality also records the inventory actions taken to deal with nonconforming product, called &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Disposition&lt;/span&gt;.  Examples of dispositions include return to the supplier, scrap, or use under specially approved conditions.  These records provide a clearer picture of how we handle nonconforming material.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Receiving inspection is just the first phase of the Oracle Quality Module. The product image is so important and the marketing group loves to add that trademark color to the design. With these advancements also comes the risk of potential failure and associated detrimental effects on product quality.  Early and continuous evaluation and subsequent management of risks in the developmental phases of new process design increases the likelihood of correcting these faults and ensuring a low probability of failure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://bit.ly/zeusweb"&gt;Zeus&lt;/a&gt; uses a proactive approach to identify potential risks, estimate the level of the risk and determine if the risk is acceptable or if it requires mitigation.  Because risk cannot be completely eliminated, the risk that remains must be managed or controlled.  Many risk management strategies exist.  Our Research &amp;amp; Development department uses initial risk assessment surveys, checklists and risk analysis tools to help identify potential risks.  Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is one of the tools which is frequently used in new process development.  The output of the risk analysis is then used to develop control plans to manage the remaining risk after risk reduction activities have been implemented and reviewed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two important standards ISO 13485 and ISO 14971 define the quality systems used in the medical device industry.  The later specifies the important requirements for risk management. FEP has been used in applications ranging from medical applications to electronic devices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The resin is melt processed allowing for long continuous lengths which work well in applications like wire or cable. This USP Class VI resin is biocompatible, easy to clean, and environmentally stable. Another characteristic widely known of FEP is its transparent color. A look into the key properties of FEP will exemplify its advantages over other fluoropolymers such as PTFE.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;FEP sets itself apart in the fluoropolymer world by having a lower heat shrink temperature than PTFE, being more flexible than PTFE, more optically clear than PTFE, and more lubricious than PFA and other Zeus products.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the years Zeus has constantly increased its capabilities with FEP. Zeus is able to etch the material which can make it much more bondable. Zeus can manufacture FEP tubing in tight tolerances in various forms such as tubing, lay-flat, heat shrink, and more. What is material &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/cPOkug"&gt;biocompatibility&lt;/a&gt;?  It’s a material’s lack of interaction with living tissue or a living system by not being toxic, injurious, or physiologically reactive, and not causing immunological rejection.  Basically, it means the material can function in a specific application without harming the patient.  Potential hazard to a patient can be minimized by testing plastics for &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/cPOkug"&gt;biocompatibility&lt;/a&gt;.  But remember, no single test may be sufficient to define &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/cPOkug"&gt;biocompatibility&lt;/a&gt;.  Two common test regimens are commonly used to measure &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/cPOkug"&gt;biocompatibility&lt;/a&gt;, UPS &lt;88&gt;, Biological Reactivity Testing (USP Class VI), and ISO 10993, Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;USP &lt;88&gt; is used to classify plastics in Classes I-VI with Class VI requiring the most stringent testing and viewed as the minimum requirement a raw material must meet in order to be considered for use in medical applications.  The tests for &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/cPOkug"&gt;biocompatibility &lt;/a&gt;include: Systemic Toxicology Test to determine the irritant effect of toxic leachables present in extracts of test materials, Intracutaneous Test used to assess the localized reaction of tissue to leachable substances, and Implantation Test used to evaluate the reaction of living tissue to the plastic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Zeus products known to be used in medical applications are assessed for &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/cPOkug"&gt;biocompatibility &lt;/a&gt;and meet USP Class VI criteria. This determination provides our medical customers with the confidence that the component parts purchased from Zeus are medical grade. Understanding the different levels or permeation can be significant when picking up the polymer for your critical application.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Definition:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. To spread or flow throughout...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. To pass through opening or small gaps of...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Charge, saturate, suffuse, impregnate, or transfuse&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Permeation is the product of two functions - the diffusion between molecular chains and the solubility of the permanent in polymer. Diffusion is driven by a concentration gradient for liquids and a partial pressure gradient for gasses. Solubility is related to the affinity of the PERMANENT for the polymer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The different levels of water absorption are listed &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/dpsa0N"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;. It is more widely known in our industry as the coefficient of friction. Lubricity is one of many unique characteristics of fluoropolymers that separates itself from other polymers. The fluoropolymers have a smooth surface with a slippery feel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because of the low coefficient of friction, there have been many practical non-lubricated and minimally-lubricated mechanical systems developed around fluoropolymers. The low coefficient of friction is a result of low interfacial forces between its surface and another materials and the comparatively low force of deform.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Why Lubricity?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some of the advantages of the fluoropolymers lubricity would be increased flow rates, abrasion resistance, and the overall "slickness" of the material when the application calls for it. Many people in the industry know Zeus for our existing capabilities in extruding fluoropolymers. Those capabilities still exist, but at the same time Zeus is furthering our product offerings to meet the expanding needs of our customers. New applications require more from a tube than just an ID and OD. Zeus' secondary operations continually expand to provide features beyond the tube it self. What is the Triple S?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Scoring&lt;/span&gt; is defined as a partial slit of a tube’s wall running axially along the length.  The scoring helps to facilitate the removal of tubing from a device or a manufacturing tool.  Some polymers need the score to create a nice, even tear longitudinally.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Slitting&lt;/span&gt; is defined as a longitudinal cut that goes through the entire wall of the tube along its axial length.  A score allows a tube to be slipped over other components and easily removed (easily installed).  We are also capable of slitting in a spiral. Just as the product name indicates, these material are recovered, or "shrunk", by heat.  It is no big secret that as we move into the Spring and Summer months, the outside temperature increases. Customers that use our Heat Shrink may have noticed that along with the change in the temperature comes a change in shipping methods and storage conditions for Heat Shrink Products.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;FEP Heat Shrink products have an optimal recovery temperature in the 400º - 420º Fahrenheit range.  This range is the lower than the 654º - 670º Fahrenheit used to recover PTFE Heat Shrink products. Due to the low temperature for the recovery of FEP, Zeus recommends that these products be shipped using an overnight method.  It is quite possible that the temperature during transit can begin the recovery process.  If it recovers even slightly, it can be out of spec once the material arrives at your facility.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In order to ensure that your product arrives in ideal condition, Zeus takes a precautionary measure. All Heat Shrink products are packaged with heat sensors that will indicate if the material has experienced a specific amount of heat in transit.  The sensor will "trip" if the product sees 120º Fahrenheit. Sometimes, though, the bean counters trim a little too much off of a QA/QC Department’s budget and suddenly the company finds itself short on staff, short on time, and/or short on equipment needed to get necessary polymer testing done.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"&gt;When that happens, a company must outsource some (or all) of its polymer/plastics testing and the person responsible for quickly finding a polymer testing lab to do the testing usually finds themselves asking, “How do I find a polymer testing laboratory?  How do I submit samples?  How long will it take to get them back?  Can we trust the data we receive?  How much will this cost?” … and the list goes on.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"&gt;Should you ever find yourself asking those questions, consider the following points before making a decision on which Third Party Polymer Lab to trust:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"&gt;1.       Put together a list of all the testing you will need along with a list all of the appropriate test method(s) required to obtain the desired data.  Doing so will make searching for a capable laboratory on the Internet much easier. When contacting a Third Party Laboratory, let them know upfront that you want to work with an Accredited Laboratory.  Any lab worth talking to will gladly tell you if they possess A2LA (or other) Accreditation and have no problem providing you with a copy of their certificate and/or scope of accreditation.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"&gt;3.       Let the prospective lab know what time-frame you have to work with right away.  Sometimes even the fastest lab gets backlogged and a good lab will let you know right away if they can accommodate your time-frame and if any expediting fees might apply.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"&gt;4.       Insist that the prospective lab send its quotation for analysis to you by email and ask them to specifically mention all testing to be done, a time-frame for completion, and, of course, a final cost for analysis (itemized if possible).  If they cannot do so, then move on to the next lab and don’t look back.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"&gt;Locating the right Third Party Laboratory for Polymer Testing will not take much time if you let those four simple instructions guide you through the research process.
