Background
Tipping the end of a plastic tube is one of the value added services and operations we perform for our customers. Tipping involves forming a radius or chamfering the end of the tube to facilitate the assembly of parts. In finished medical devices such as catheters it is used to ease the insertion of the device into the body.

Tipping Capabilities
Through an extensive investment in our secondary services and capabilities, Zeus engineers have developed a broad portfolio of tipping capabilities. Thermoforming technology can be used to radius the tip in a variety of customer-specified designs. Specialty grinding can be used in applications where thermoforming may not be an option.

From pronounced tips to a slight easing of the tube's edges Zeus can perform a range of tipping operations. Over the years we have explored a broad portfolio of tipping configurations ranging from decreasing the ID of the tube as the tip profile changes to a complete closure of the end of the tube at the tip.

Formulations of Radiopaque PEEK extrusions

PEEK is now used by leading design engineers throughout the world because of its great success in the health science and medical industries.Its purity, lubricity and mechanical properties make the material an ideal choice in these industries.

Zeus has the capability to fill natural PEEK with radio-opaque filler, resulting in Radio-opaque (RO) PEEK. RO PEEK is defined by its ability to illuminate during a surgical procedure utilizing fluoroscopy. The advantage of PEEK compared to alternative polymer base materials with radioopaque filler is the high strength, wear resistance, and heat and chemical resistivity derived from PEEK. Unfilled PEEK positions itself as a high performance alternative to traditional materials including aluminum, steel, glass, and other polymers, and the same properties hold true for RO PEEK. The introduction of this filler adds to the already available stiffness while maintaining a lighter weight than many metal alternatives.

Zeus has the ability to maximize PEEK’s inherent tensile strength and stiffness, biocompatibility, electrical properties and purity into innovative components for advanced technologies.

European Expansion

Last week, Zeus published news of a €10 million investment in Ireland which will be made with the assistance of the Irish Development Agency (IDA). The announcement involves a 40,000 sq ft expansion to Zeus' Irish facilities, which is expected to take 3 years to complete along with the creation of 75 new manufacturing jobs in Letterkenny. This news is especially welcomed since Ireland is currently facing major budget cuts and high unemployment as ongoing effects of the financial crisis of 2009.

“The decision by Zeus to expand its operation in Letterkenny is testament to the availability of a highly-skilled workforce in the North West region. On behalf of the government, I look forward to providing continued support to Zeus as its Irish operation grows and develops.” Ireland Minister for Education Mary Coughlan TD.

Zeus CEO John Worley, Jr. has added, “Since we opened a facility in Ireland in 2005, we have seen tremendous growth in our European customer base. We are extremely excited about this expansion as we will be even more equipped to meet the demand for our products and services in this region.”

Custom Etching

Fluoropolymer plastics (Teflon®, PTFE, FEP, PFA) are prized for their high performance properties including a high degree of lubricity (slipperiness). This property allows them to excel in demanding applications such as endoscopes, guiding catheters, and other applications where friction is a concern.

However, the lubricity of these plastics also makes them difficult to bond to using conventional methods and adhesives. Chemical etching of the surface is required to effect an acceptable bond. Zeus has pioneered the development of etched tubing and, through a proprietary process, has developed a wide range of etching capabilities, with unsurpassed contact angle measurements.

Low Temp Tubing

In case you haven't noticed, it is getting cold here in the states. To some people this is nothing new, but to others this is down right chilly. Zeus provides tubing that is no stranger to these cold temperatures.

Most plastics at room temperature show their familiar properties of flexibility (a low Young’s modulus) and high resistance to cracking, but when the temperature decreases this can change rapidly and many common plastics become brittle with low failure stresses.

Low temperatures can be more harmful to plastics than high temperatures. Catastrophic failures can occur if materials selection does not take account of the low temperature properties of plastics.

Fluoropolymers at Low Temps
Fluoropolymer resins maintain their lubricity, abrasion resistance, and strength at temperatures below freezing. Extensive testing at 0° and lower have shown that PTFE is the ideal choice for cryogenic applications.

PTFE's Performance
With a low temperature range of -450° F (-267° C), showing little or no embrittlement, PTFE remains highly flexible at temperatures below -100° F (-73° C).

Contingency Planning provides Assurance of Uninterrupted Service

In a day and age filled with concern over supply issues, Zeus is planning ahead to ensure continuity of our manufacturing abilities, material supply and customer service. Disaster can strike anywhere at any time which could jeopardize a business’s ability to function normally. As a supplier to a global market with applications including medical, industrial, aerospace and electronic industries, Zeus has many customers depending on us for the supply of high quality polymer components. Zeus has production facilities in the United States including: Raritan, NJ, Orangeburg, SC, Gaston, SC and Aiken, SC and a European facility located in Letterkenny, Ireland. Each facility has its own tooling shop, extruder equipment, procurement, quality control and distribution. There is no interdependency among the facilities. The geographic separation of the facilities ensures that not more than one facility would experience a significant loss caused by the same catastrophic event (tornado, hurricane, wild fire, earthquake, epidemic, act of terrorism, etc.).

Primary and secondary vendors of resins with multiple manufacturing facilities and maintenance of minimum in-house inventories ensures adequate supplies of raw materials to cover vendor lag, demand surges and temporary shortages. Zeus’s ability to produce product also depends on extruding equipment, special tooling and skilled technicians. All Zeus facilities use the same extruder types (Melt and Paste). The Paste Extruders and special tooling are manufactured by Zeus. Our skilled workforce is also transferable between facilities. Although most orders for a particular customer are produced at designated production site, the use of the same raw materials and raw material suppliers at each site (with few exception) means customers would not need to qualify new materials if a change of manufacturing facility were required. Data is maintained in an ERP system which is backed-up daily to the server and weekly to a secure offsite location. Our Customer Service Representatives and Technical personnel can work remotely to assist in meeting customer needs and requests even during a time of crisis at one of our facilities. Customers will be notified by Sales if a disastrous event causing disruption or loss of service occurs.

Bursting at the Seams

Often times a device manufacturer will need a tube to withstand a given amount of pressure before exploding. Each application requires a unique amount of pressure and Zeus is here to help solve the problem. Zeus materials have varying properties and the calculation of burst pressure depends several factors.

In order to determine the theoretical number you will need: Inner Diameter, Outer Diameter, and Material Tensile Strength. A list of tensile values is below.

Tensile Strength Values:

* PTFE - 2,500 psi
* FEP - 3,000 psi
* PFA - 4,000 psi
* ETFE - 6,500 psi
* PEEK - 13,000 psi

The equation can be found here and it does not factor in steam pressure, altitude, etc., and it is calculated at ambient room temperature. The Burst pressure result is meant as a guideline in design, not a definitive number.

Oracle Quality Module

Earlier this year, Zeus Industrial Products, Inc. initiated a major quality improvement project, the Oracle Quality Module. This system for data collection and management of nonconformances, customer complaints, and CAPA is fully integrated with our Oracle ERP system which has been in use since 2005.

On October 4, 2010 Zeus implemented the first phase of this project, receiving inspection at the Orangeburg facility. In this new process, the receiving inspector enters data from supplier certifications and from Zeus inspections into Oracle Quality. The system automatically compares these results to the material specifications maintained within Oracle. When all results are within spec, the material is released to the appropriate inventory for use. Out-of-spec material is assigned to MRB so that it cannot be issued to jobs within the system.

If material is rejected, a Nonconformance is issued within the system. For purchased materials, this results in a lower quality rating for the supplier. Reports of supplier quality and delivery are available through the system, allowing easy monitoring of supplier performance.

Depending upon the seriousness of a nonconformance, we may also require the supplier to formally explain what caused the error and how they have fixed the source of the problem. This Corrective Action Report, or CAR, documents the problem, its root cause, and actions taken to assure that it will not happen again. This information is recorded in Oracle Quality and reported on an Oracle Report.

Oracle Quality also records the inventory actions taken to deal with nonconforming product, called Disposition. Examples of dispositions include return to the supplier, scrap, or use under specially approved conditions. These records provide a clearer picture of how we handle nonconforming material.

Receiving inspection is just the first phase of the Oracle Quality Module. Other quality information from in-process and final inspections and customer complaints will be included in future phases of this project during 2011.

Add a Little Color to Your World

Ever get so busy designing your product or device look up and see 14 different sized tubes? Can't remember which tube is which? Have no fear. Zeus is here to help. Try adding a little color to your world.

Coloring the tubes can be useful for a number of reasons. The product image is so important and the marketing group loves to add that trademark color to the design. Your device could be recognizable by its red or blue tubing components.

A color can help ease the manufacturing process by differentiating the yellow one from the purple and orange ones. The manufacturing steps could list out taking one green tube and two black tubes instead of risking operator error. It just adds an extra layer of comfort when producing the device.

Zeus can add color to extruded tubes as well a heat shrink tubes. There is more information on color listed here. We also offer numerous colors that are RoHS compliant. Take some time to consider the question, "Is color right for me?"

Risk Management used in New Process Development

New technologies are emerging every day leading to technological advancements that have great potential for improving the way products are made and used. With these advancements also comes the risk of potential failure and associated detrimental effects on product quality. Early and continuous evaluation and subsequent management of risks in the developmental phases of new process design increases the likelihood of correcting these faults and ensuring a low probability of failure.

Zeus uses a proactive approach to identify potential risks, estimate the level of the risk and determine if the risk is acceptable or if it requires mitigation. Because risk cannot be completely eliminated, the risk that remains must be managed or controlled. Many risk management strategies exist. Our Research & Development department uses initial risk assessment surveys, checklists and risk analysis tools to help identify potential risks. Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is one of the tools which is frequently used in new process development. The output of the risk analysis is then used to develop control plans to manage the remaining risk after risk reduction activities have been implemented and reviewed.

Two important standards ISO 13485 and ISO 14971 define the quality systems used in the medical device industry. The later specifies the important requirements for risk management. The benefits of a risk-based quality system approach used by Zeus as a component supplier to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) includes increased supplier control, audit support, improved risk management, and a more-efficient supply chain.

MEDTEC Ireland

We’re really excited here in Zeus Ireland gearing up for one of our favorite events in our annual calendar - The MEDTEC Ireland Show. MEDTEC Ireland is undoubtedly one of the smallest shows at which Zeus exhibits. However, one would be hard pressed to find another that rivals it in terms of the quality and volume of visitors we have the opportunity to meet during the two days.

The MEDTEC Ireland show takes place in Galway, a town on the West Coast of Ireland. Galway is most famous for three things: Rain, Pubs and Medical Devices. The Galway area contains the world’s largest cluster of Medical Device companies outside of the United States. For this reason Galway is a hotbed of medical innovation and hive of activity for Zeus where we support customers with their life saving device designs be they a small start up company, a large multinational or a University researcher. FEP as an Alternative

Fluorinatedethylenepropylene, or FEP, is a versatile fluoropolymer that can act as an excellent substitute for PTFE in some applications. FEP has been used in applications ranging from medical applications to electronic devices.

The resin is melt processed allowing for long continuous lengths which work well in applications like wire or cable. This USP Class VI resin is biocompatible, easy to clean, and environmentally stable. Another characteristic widely known of FEP is its transparent color. A look into the key properties of FEP will exemplify its advantages over other fluoropolymers such as PTFE.

FEP sets itself apart in the fluoropolymer world by having a lower heat shrink temperature than PTFE, being more flexible than PTFE, more optically clear than PTFE, and more lubricious than PFA and other Zeus products.

Over the years Zeus has constantly increased its capabilities with FEP. Zeus is able to etch the material which can make it much more bondable. Zeus can manufacture FEP tubing in tight tolerances in various forms such as tubing, lay-flat, heat shrink, and more. A Little More on the Biocompatibility of Plastics

Due to the variety of plastic materials and device applications, biocompatibility is a complex issue. What is material biocompatibility? It’s a material’s lack of interaction with living tissue or a living system by not being toxic, injurious, or physiologically reactive, and not causing immunological rejection. Basically, it means the material can function in a specific application without harming the patient. Potential hazard to a patient can be minimized by testing plastics for biocompatibility. But remember, no single test may be sufficient to define biocompatibility. Two common test regimens are commonly used to measure biocompatibility, UPS <88>, Biological Reactivity Testing (USP Class VI), and ISO 10993, Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices.

USP <88> is used to classify plastics in Classes I-VI with Class VI requiring the most stringent testing and viewed as the minimum requirement a raw material must meet in order to be considered for use in medical applications. The tests for biocompatibility include: Systemic Toxicology Test to determine the irritant effect of toxic leachables present in extracts of test materials, Intracutaneous Test used to assess the localized reaction of tissue to leachable substances, and Implantation Test used to evaluate the reaction of living tissue to the plastic.

Zeus products known to be used in medical applications are assessed for biocompatibility and meet USP Class VI criteria. This determination provides our medical customers with the confidence that the component parts purchased from Zeus are medical grade. Further testing may be required by device manufacturers depending on the device category (intended use) and the exposure period of the body to the specific device. ISO 10993-1, “Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices: Part 1: Evaluation and Testing” provides a methodology for choosing the proper biological evaluation test program.

Stranded PEEK Wire

Recently, Zeus has been become an approved supplier of PEEK Insulated Wire across various industries. Traditionally, Zeus has only supplied PEEK Insulated Wire over a single conductor; however, we have been challenged by our customers to produce Stranded PEEK Insulated Wire. Zeus has now successfully produced Stranded PEEK Insulated Wire in various sizes, including silver and nickel-plated copper.

We have been working to streamline our process and are providing smaller orders for customers to test our PEEK Insulated Wire. These sizes range from AWG4 through AWG32 and wall thicknesses between .0005" and .012".

Last week, we discussed the importance of choosing polymers based on lubricity, This weeks focus is on permeability. Understanding the different levels or permeation can be significant when picking up the polymer for your critical application.

Definition:

1. To spread or flow throughout...

2. To pass through opening or small gaps of...

3. Charge, saturate, suffuse, impregnate, or transfuse

4. Permeation is the product of two functions - the diffusion between molecular chains and the solubility of the permanent in polymer. Diffusion is driven by a concentration gradient for liquids and a partial pressure gradient for gasses. Solubility is related to the affinity of the PERMANENT for the polymer.

Caution -- Lubricious Tubing

What is Lubricity?
Lubricity is defined in the Webster's New World Dictionary as "slipperiness; smoothness". It is more widely known in our industry as the coefficient of friction. Lubricity is one of many unique characteristics of fluoropolymers that separates itself from other polymers. The fluoropolymers have a smooth surface with a slippery feel.

Because of the low coefficient of friction, there have been many practical non-lubricated and minimally-lubricated mechanical systems developed around fluoropolymers. The low coefficient of friction is a result of low interfacial forces between its surface and another materials and the comparatively low force of deform.

Why Lubricity?
Some of the advantages of the fluoropolymers lubricity would be increased flow rates, abrasion resistance, and the overall "slickness" of the material when the application calls for it. In fact, PTFE has a coefficient of friction that is, amazingly enough, comparable to ice on ice, and it even remains stable under severe load.

Adding More Value -- The Triple S

A few weeks ago we highlighted out Pad Printing, and this week we will focus on Scoring, Slitting, and Skiving (The Triple S). Many people in the industry know Zeus for our existing capabilities in extruding fluoropolymers. Those capabilities still exist, but at the same time Zeus is furthering our product offerings to meet the expanding needs of our customers. New applications require more from a tube than just an ID and OD. Zeus' secondary operations continually expand to provide features beyond the tube it self. What is the Triple S?

Scoring is defined as a partial slit of a tube’s wall running axially along the length. The scoring helps to facilitate the removal of tubing from a device or a manufacturing tool. Some polymers need the score to create a nice, even tear longitudinally.

Slitting is defined as a longitudinal cut that goes through the entire wall of the tube along its axial length. A score allows a tube to be slipped over other components and easily removed (easily installed). We are also capable of slitting in a spiral. A slit tube can also be slightly flared to enable the user easy access to grab during removal.

Skiving is defined as the slicing of the tubing to remove a portion of the surface. Partial Skiving can be done radially and longitudinally. Partial slitting is done to remove a section of tubing. This removal allows for entry/exit points along the tube for use during the application.

The VSM Advantage

In an earlier entry, we discussed A3 Thinking. “A3” refers to the problem solving format we use throughout Operations whether the problem is Quality, Cost or Delivery oriented. By utilizing one of our favorite lean manufacturing tools, VSM (Value Stream Mapping), it was confirmed that one of our departments was in need of significant cost reduction. When mapping our current state, we found it fraught with waste. Non-value added activities outweighed productive time while inventories grew fat and obsolete.

In an effort to attack these wasteful practices, a comprehensive A3 was initiated. The department has been realigned in an effort to streamline the process flow, allowing for real-time inspection, and resulting in reduced overruns and scrap. VSM is just one of many tools Zeus is using to eliminate waste and enhance its manufacturing practices.

Summer Heat and FEP Heat Shrink

Many of Zeus' customers know Zeus for our Heat Shrink products, and use them in their production. Just as the product name indicates, these material are recovered, or "shrunk", by heat. It is no big secret that as we move into the Spring and Summer months, the outside temperature increases. Customers that use our Heat Shrink may have noticed that along with the change in the temperature comes a change in shipping methods and storage conditions for Heat Shrink Products.

FEP Heat Shrink products have an optimal recovery temperature in the 400º - 420º Fahrenheit range. This range is the lower than the 654º - 670º Fahrenheit used to recover PTFE Heat Shrink products. Due to the low temperature for the recovery of FEP, Zeus recommends that these products be shipped using an overnight method. It is quite possible that the temperature during transit can begin the recovery process. If it recovers even slightly, it can be out of spec once the material arrives at your facility.

In order to ensure that your product arrives in ideal condition, Zeus takes a precautionary measure. All Heat Shrink products are packaged with heat sensors that will indicate if the material has experienced a specific amount of heat in transit. The sensor will "trip" if the product sees 120º Fahrenheit. Once the material arrives, we also recommend that material be stored at ambient temperatures to ensure that the material does not see enough heat to begin the recovery process.

Polymer Materials… Chicken or the Egg?

Product designers often wrestle with a ‘chicken or the egg’ type question when working on a new polymer part: “Which do we specify first: The polymer or the design?”

• Specifying the wrong polymer material for a part could condemn the part to failure even before the first one comes off the assembly line if no possible design can make use of the polymer’s properties in the correct manner.

• Conversely, specifying an incorrect design without considering whether or
not a polymer material exists that can accommodate the physical/thermal/chemical requirements of the design could also condemn the part to failure.

In all honesty, and in our experience, both the chicken and egg must arrive together if the part designer hopes to have a smooth transition from concept to product. A3 Thinking

What is an A3? Simply put, it is an international-size piece of paper that is approximately 11-by-17 inches. However at Zeus, A3 means much, much more.

“A3” refers to the problem solving format we use throughout Operations whether the problem is Quality, Cost or Delivery oriented. The A3 process utilizes the Plan, Do, Check, and Act methodology (PDCA) which can be used to solve any problem within any organization. At Zeus, every factory utilizes the A3 process to identify waste within their facility and then uses the PDCA methodology working across different functional areas to eliminate the barriers that are preventing us from reaching our “future state.”

The “Check” portion of the PDCA is often the most overlooked section of an A3 but in reality is probably the most important. An effective "Check" step will ensure that the improvements being made will remain effective and that degradation of the improvements will not occur.

Understanding Contact Angle

One of the most advantageous properties of flouropolymers such as PTFE, FEP, and PFA (often called Teflon)is the lubricity. Many customers utilize the "slippery" materials for passage through or around the tubing. This is a very important function of these polymer extrusions. However, some applications require bonding to part, or all, of the tubing. Zeus has the capability to etch our extrusions for better bonding at these critical locations. Ever wondered how to check the etch?

Zeus uses the measurement of the contact angle as the primary method to evaluate the etch. Contact angle measurements of liquid droplets on substrate surfaces are used to characterize surface wettability. A description and figure can be seen here.

Zeus’ Research and Development team continues to build expertise and capabilities to meet increased demand for new materials, products, and processes. In order to continually improve our ability to meet customer needs, Zeus has added technical expertise in the areas of polymer synthesis, polymer extrusion and expanded PTFE. In fact, we have more than doubled our engineering staff in the past 12 months. The team has significantly increased its capital capabilities, adding additional Bioabsorbable extrusion capacity for tubing and monofilament as well as Bioabsorbable multi-filament capacity. In times of economic crisis, the ‘bean counters’ like to pull out the books and look for ways to cut costs by trimming a little off of each department’s budget. Sometimes, though, the bean counters trim a little too much off of a QA/QC Department’s budget and suddenly the company finds itself short on staff, short on time, and/or short on equipment needed to get necessary polymer testing done.

When that happens, a company must outsource some (or all) of its polymer/plastics testing and the person responsible for quickly finding a polymer testing lab to do the testing usually finds themselves asking, “How do I find a polymer testing laboratory? How do I submit samples? How long will it take to get them back? Can we trust the data we receive? How much will this cost?” … and the list goes on.

Should you ever find yourself asking those questions, consider the following points before making a decision on which Third Party Polymer Lab to trust:

1. Put together a list of all the testing you will need along with a list all of the appropriate test method(s) required to obtain the desired data. Doing so will make searching for a capable laboratory on the Internet much easier. Simply type in the test name, ASTM Test Method, ISO Method, etc. into Google and choose who to call from the results of your search.

2. When contacting a Third Party Laboratory, let them know upfront that you want to work with an Accredited Laboratory. Any lab worth talking to will gladly tell you if they possess A2LA (or other) Accreditation and have no problem providing you with a copy of their certificate and/or scope of accreditation.

3. Let the prospective lab know what time-frame you have to work with right away. Sometimes even the fastest lab gets backlogged and a good lab will let you know right away if they can accommodate your time-frame and if any expediting fees might apply.

4. Insist that the prospective lab send its quotation for analysis to you by email and ask them to specifically mention all testing to be done, a time-frame for completion, and, of course, a final cost for analysis (itemized if possible). If they cannot do so, then move on to the next lab and don’t look back.

Locating the right Third Party Laboratory for Polymer Testing will not take much time if you let those four simple instructions guide you through the research process. Additionally, if a potential lab has replied to your inquiries properly when you followed those instructions, the decision-making process probably won’t take that long, either.

Lean Principles at Zeus

Did you know that Zeus has embraced many Lean Manufacturing concepts? As a matter of fact, Zeus has Certified Lean Practitioners in numerous manufacturing sites and a wide variety of functional areas. One of the Lean tools being utilized by Zeus to improve our operations and reduce waste is Value Stream Mapping (VSM). VSM is being used to streamline our sales order entry flow, new product development flow, and to improve the manufacturing lead time on existing products.

Our VSM efforts incorporate our Future state as well as the current state of process flow. These efforts are used as a road map for smaller, more focused improvements. The end result is an overall improved process flow versus an individual operation improvement. Likewise, Zeus uses VSM tools in new process development to incorporate one-piece flow principles into our production processes well before the product is brought to the market. Our goal is to add value without waste to our customers with products that are as cost effective as possible.

New PEEK Offering

Zeus continues to drive our innovation as customer applications become more demanding. After noticing a trend for more strength from our PEEK tubing, we have developed our current product offerings to meet these needs. Zeus has expanded its PEEK Fiber product line to a PEEK Drawn tube.

PEEK Drawn tubing has an extremely high tensile strength which improves mechanical properties, such as torque resistance. This is an exciting new product line, as it can be manufactured in a USP Class VI approved resin that is lightweight and is closer than ever to the strength offered by steel tubing. Zeus has been manufacturing PEEK Fiber since November of 2008. The new PEEK Drawn tubing products will offer our customers an additional high performance plastic alternative to stainless steel in their products.

New Quality Module

On February 1st, 2010, Zeus officially kicked off the implementation of the Oracle Quality Module. Zeus has been utlizing the Oracle ERP system since January 2005. Various modules have been implemented over time and now we will be taking advantage of the functionality that this Quality Module offers.

The Oracle Quality Module is a fully integrated system for data collection and management of nonconformances, customer complaints, and CAPAs. The system includes workflows and automated alerts. With this system in place, we will be able to better manage our quality data and the information critical to our business. The data needed to drive our improvements within our Quality Management System will literally be at our fingertips. The Oracle Quality Module will also allow us to take our customer service to the next level.

We will keep our customers updated as we progress through this implementation process. This is a significant investment for Zeus, but we feel that is a vital investment to drive improvements in our products and service.

Advanced Materials Division Achieves Certification to ISO 13485

The certification to ISO 13485:2003, an internationally recognized management system standard, strengthens Zeus’ credibility and commitment to consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements in the medical device industry. Emerging Technology

Unless you’ve been under a boulder for the past 3 years, you’ve heard of electrospinning. Electrospinning is an emerging technology that produces polymer fibers with thicknesses ranging from the nano- to the microscale. Fabrics with complex shapes can be electrospun from solutions, producing a broad range of fiber and fabric properties. Electrospinning produces materials with high surface to weight and volume ratios, which makes these materials excellent candidates for controlled biological interactions and specialty filtration media.
